November 11 or Double 11 is an unofficial international holiday, celebrating the exact opposite of Valentine’s Day – Singles’ Day. Initially called Bachelors’ Day, it originated from China and created quite a stir all over the world! Here is how:
- Started by a group of friends back in 1993, who were unattached university students at the time.
- Got widely popular after an advertising campaign in 2009, initiated by the Chinese shopping platform Alibaba, urging singles to celebrate their status by treating themselves to a gift.
- Other businesses spotted the potential of Singles’ Day too, and made it go global.
- The shopping event got so popular, that in recent years a number of retail giants reported more revenue from 11/11 than during Black Friday and Boxing Day!
- Ironically, a lot of Chinese couples get married precisely on November 11…
